God
I was raised Catholic, and although never a Church-going guy or a real "believer", I had a residual belief that there was a God -- whatever that meant. However, in 2009 I started devoting much of time to the critical study and examination of religion and God, and had since come to the conclusion that the personal God as described in the Bible almost certainly does not exist.
I purposely tried to leave religion out of the book, but there was a few places it slipped in. Here are those places with the updates.
Dedication:
To my mother, who always knew I would make it, but didn’t live long enough to see that she was right. I love you mom.
Q&A about faith being part of success:
I believe that having faith in anything that you believe will help you succeed, is another way of increasing one's odds of success. However, I also believe that one's dependence on an outside force (God, the universe, lady luck, etc.) to bring one success will ultimately lead to failure. It reminds me of the story of the priest that prayed everyday to the Lord to win the lottery, then after 10 years the priest lost faith and starting cursing the Lord saying, "Why God? I have devoted my life to serving you. Why will you not grant me this one wish?" Then, a loud booming voice came from the sky and said, "Priest, meet me half way - buy a ticket!"
Day 360 - some God talk:
In my own success biography I use terms like living a "blessed life" and I thank God for things. If there is a God, we all should thank him for life in general, but the conditions in our life are a result of many factors including, where and when we were born, how we were raised, genetic makeup, education, influence, and our own personal desires. Gratuitous appreciation for a god who probably does not even exist is an insult to those real people, who we know exist, that really deserve out gratitude. Like the parents who drop to their knees and praise God when their child survives a 13 hour major surgery, and give no credit to the surgeons responsible for the child surviving.
Closing quote on day 366:
I close with the serenity prayer. I still really like this one even if more of an affirmation than a prayer. It is all about taking responsibility, although it still does technically include a petition to God.
